2001 NEWS!
OCT. 2001 - I was very honored to sing at a tribute concert for Joni Mitchell at the World Leaders Festival at Harbourfront in Toronto in October. Other artists on the bill included Jane Siberry, Marc Jordan, Tuku, David Sereda, Ember Swift, Emm Gryner, Rebecca Jenkins & Martina Sorbara. I performed Big Yellow Taxi, and Woodstock - t'was a great time. There are a couple of reviews of the show - click here for the Globe & Mail review; and a review from the Joni Mitchell.com website.
OCT. 2001 - I've begun working with a group of Toronto musicians in a group called "Betty & the Bobs" - they include Katherine Wheatley, Soozi Schlanger (Swamperella), David Woodhead, Bill Brennan, Rich Greenspoon, and Wendell Ferguson. The mandate of the band is to do all the songs we have ever wanted to do, but would never get around to doing in our own bands. This includes a bunch of old tunes we grew up with -- country, blues, R&B, Beatles, gospel, old jazz, as well as some wacky original songs.
OCT. 2001 - VSH's songs, "Folky Song, Funny Note" and "Drive That Rhythm" were featured on CBC national radio on Richardson's Roundup. Bill Richardson was featuring songs that had some laughter in them. Big hug and thanks to Jacques Pelletier for sending in our CD and making it happen!
APRIL 2001 - I was very honoured to go down to Waltham, MA to perform with Vinnick Sheppard Harte, Joe Cormier (MA/NS), Gerry Robichaud (MA/NB), Cindy Thompson (ON), Marion Linton (ON); Matt Leavenworth (MA), Rick Fines (ON), Georgette Fry (ON), David Woodhead (ON) for our friend Terry Eagan at the unveiling of the Mary Eagan Garden at the Deaconess-Waltham Hospital in Waltham MA. Terry is an inspiring and amazing guy with great spirit and a tonne of energy! Check out his webpage for the story behind the beautiful garden that was unveiled in April.
MARCH/APRIL 2001 - VSH was recently featured in the March/April 2001 issue of Canadian Musician in the Showcase section. Click here to check out the article!! A big thanks to Jim Kelly for the feature...
FEB 2001 - Several years ago I travelled to Bosnia as part of a contingent to play for Canadian Peacekeepers. Out of that experience came a song entitled, "No Boundaries", co-written by Kristi Magraw and myself. We are happy to say that the song placed 2nd in the Environment/Human Rights category of the UNISONG International Songwriting Contest. I also had two other co-writes place in the top ten percent - "I'm Not Gonna Cry" (Smith/Vinnick/Bynoe) and "Wish I Could Say (What I Mean)" (Vinnick/Sohmer/Cooper).
FEB. 2001 - Kristi Magraw, Stu Lister (Lister) and I placed in the top 6 (out of 1500) in the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) songwriting contest with our song, "All That I Ask For". This is our fourth contest win/placement with this song.
JAN 2001 - I got to sing on a few tracks on Rick Fines' new CD, "Live At The Harvest", from Festival Distribution. I also sang a song called "Garden"on the new "Lexx - The Series" CD. Lexx is a sci-fi show that appears on Space Channel in Canada, and the Sci-Fi Channel in the US.
